Easy Pedallers and Shorter Training Rides

Ludlow Easy Pedallers, 2025 Saturday Rides

On the 1st Saturday of every month the club support a shorter more gentle group ride along some of our quieter country lanes. Lots of chit chat without the need for too much huff puff.  Organised and led by a few of our more experienced club riders everyone over the age of 14 is welcome and it is an ideal opportunity for those who have not ridden for some time to get those bikes out of the shed, checked over, lubed and pumped up. Confirmed Saturday dates for 2025 are March 1, April 5, May 3, June 7, July 5, Aug 2, Sept 6, Oct 4).

As a guide, last year, depending on weather we generally had between about 12 and 20 riders taking part. Rides tended to last just under 2 hours with most participants covering the 20 mile relatively flat route at an average speed of just under 12mph. We like to keep everyone together but depending on numbers and make up of those attending we may split into a two sometimes 3 groups. Either way we all get together for some tea and biscuits and a good chat at the finish line courtesy of Pearce Cycles

Favourite Shorter Training Routes around Ludlow

Our aim is to provide the widest variety of cycle related activities to meet the needs of our local community but currently the majority of cyclists in the club are at an intermediate and above level. Our rides tend to be upwards of 40 miles long, many are quite hilly and even our slower group will still tend to average 13 mph or above.

We are keen to encourage new people into the club and are happy to introduce new activities which support slightly shorter and easier rides as soon as there is a critical mass of new member demand to justify. We are always happy to discuss any new ideas members and prospective members may have.

For those who want to work themselves into group riding more gradually, detailed below are a few shorter local routes which you might want to give a try, together with a brief description as to what we really like about each.

1. Corvedale short

This flattish ride of 27km (ca.17 miles) along the River Corve Valley has less than 200 metres of climbing. This popular route goes out along Corvedale’s quiet and relatively un-potholed lanes, with Wenlock Edge and the Brown Clee in good view ahead of you. It then heads back to Ludlow from Diddlebury on B roads via Ludlow racecourse and a very short stretch of the A49. This route is also used in cycling triathlons and time trials. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39354021

2. Corvedale long

Also relatively flat for South Shropshire, this extends the short ride above to take in quiet lanes through the small villages of Tugford, Holdgate and Stanton Long (all with fine churches) under the Brown Clee Hill. It turns back to Ludlow on B roads through Hungerford, Munslow, Aston Munslow, Diddlebury and Culmington. This route also features the same very short stretch of the A49. It’s 43km (ca.28 miles) long and has 340 metres of ascent. It’s known as the Badminton route in the Club because it could be ridden in the time of a child’s badminton lesson at the Leisure Centre! https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35500980

3. Quiet Ludlow lanes

This 30km (ca.19 miles) route is ideal for those wary of traffic: it uses very quiet lanes and even crosses the A49 by an underpass, although the downside of this is that a very short stretch is a rutted farm track, some of the lanes have grass growing in the middle and there can be potholes anywhere. The route goes north through Priors Halton with fine views of Ludlow Castle and Mortimer Forest. After crossing under the A49 at Bromfield, it meanders north through lanes to the near the southern flank of Wenlock Edge before returning to Ludlow on more quiet lanes and through the pretty village of Stanton Lacy. It has 325 metres of ascent. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40326325
